The holiday season is a fun and festive time, but it can bring the ultimate danger to your luxurious JAS certified hardwood floors: rock salt. Rock salt is an inevitability in colder climates like Chicago and though it does make the streets and sidewalks safer for pedestrians and cars, it poses a dangerous risk for your treasured hardwood floors.
First of all, it’s difficult to clean. Oftentimes it seems like regular mopping just moves around and spreads the salt stains, instead of removing them. Secondly, it is extremely difficult to avoid tracking salt into your home, particularly if you have pets, children, or frequent guests.
These issues can be fixed in a pretty straightforward way, though. Avoid tracking rock salt and making it worse when you try to clean by sticking to the following tips.
The first thing you should do is place a durable floor mat with a rough surface outside any doors to your home so everyone can thoroughly wipe their shoes on it before entering, thereby ridding the shoes of dirt and salt particles. Having a rug just inside the door as well is also helpful.
The next step is to make sure to ask guests to remove their shoes so as not to track in residual dirt or salt. Also be sure to frequently sweep and vacuum the area around the entrance and the doormat to guarantee that no stray particles get tracked in.
Even after following these steps, salt can still sneak into your home from time to time. So how do you get rid of it?
Well first of all you should follow standard hardwood floor maintenance tips at all times. Secondly, if the salt rock damage has gone so far as to destroy your floor’s finish and/or stain, then it may be time to sand and refinish your hardwood flooring. Luckily, both solid and engineered quality hardwood flooring from FSC certified Pureza Wood stand up to many refinishings and lasts up to a century, if not longer.
