Tips For Refinishing Your Hardwood Floors

Even JAS certified hardwood floors need to be refinished every now and then. The good news is that if you have engineered hardwood flooring from PurezaWood, you know your product came straight from our FSC certified supplier in Vietnam and has several layers of engineered wood, enabling you to refinish your floors as many times as if it were solid hardwood.

Here are PurezaWood’s top tips for refinishing your hardwood floors:

Inspecting

First make sure that your hardwood floors don’t actually need to be replaced instead of refinished. You can determine this by checking to see if the planks are thin or if there are exposed nails. This would mean that you’ve reached the end of your hardwood’s refinishing life and it’s time to purchase a container or more of wholesale engineered hardwood flooring from a reputable company like PurezaWood in Chicago. However, if your floor still seems thick and sturdy, just a little roughed up on the surface, then you’re ready to begin the refinishing process.

Sanding

Now it’s time to sand down your floors to bare wood, getting rid of any surface stains and finishes. You can do this manually on smaller surface areas, but this will get tiring the larger the square footage of flooring you’re covering. In cases like this it’s a good idea to rent or buy a drum sander. This is an electrically powered machine that speeds up the sanding process and does it in a more uniform and efficient manner. You can do finer sanding work in the corners with a hand sander. Make sure to clean up shavings and dust with a vacuum cleaner afterwards.

Staining

If you’re planning on re-staining your floor in addition to refinishing it, do this right after sanding and cleaning the floor. After choosing the perfect stain color for your floor, apply it quickly and evenly and try to stick to just one coat in order to avoid variation in color across the floor’s surface. The more coats you apply, the more likely you are to make a mistake and have unevenly colored floors.

Finishing

Choose your finishing product carefully, based on your lifestyle and the kind of maintenance you’re looking to do. There’s a number hardwood flooring sealants, some oil-based, water-based or polyurethane based. Apply the sealant with a brush, following the grain of the wood, being careful to keep the application even. Let your finish dry and you’re good to go!

Once you’ve refinished your floors, you should follow proper care and maintenance procedures for hardwood flooring as well as make sure to prevent damage, in order to reduce the number of times your floors need to be refinished, lengthening their lifespan.

Most importantly, if you’re buying new hardwood flooring planks, be sure to buy them luxury flooring expert, PurezaWood so you can be certain of your hardwood flooring’s overall quality.
