Solid Hardwood Flooring no Longer Popular Choice

Every Year, Houzz releases a list of the top kitchen trends. In “Top Kitchen Trends of 2019,” Houzz states that increasing numbers of people aren’t using solid hardwood flooring anymore. But why not?

The numbers

Houzz reports that only 24% of kitchen remodelers used solid hardwood in their kitchens. Last year, 30% used solid hardwood flooring. This is a significant decrease in just one year.

Instead, 40% of homeowners chose engineered flooring, with engineered hardwood coming in at the new #1. Previously, solid hardwood flooring was the number one flooring option for kitchens, but it has officially been dethroned this year.

Solid hardwood flooring

Solid hardwood has been the most popular flooring choice for decades. It is known for its durability, strength, and solid feel. It can be refinished multiple times, and can last for decades if cared for properly.

For the first time, though, homeowners are starting to look into other flooring options.

Engineered hardwood flooring

As engineered hardwood flooring options are becoming more accessible, more homeowners are choosing them. Engineered hardwood flooring is the closest match to the durability and quality of solid hardwood flooring. It even has the same size wear layer, so it can be refinished multiple times.

Since engineered hardwood flooring can match solid hardwood and is often easier to install, along with not expanding as much in heat and handing humidity better, it’s easy to see why homeowners are choosing it as an option.

All in all, hardwood flooring is still a top choice among homeowners refinishing their kitchen. Engineered hardwood is the #1 choice for 2019, with solid hardwood flooring ranking #2. Homeowners are always looking for the best, most reliable materials for their homes. Each year it becomes more and more clear that engineered hardwood flooring is the best choice.
